Vibrating Tools Injuries Win Road Worker £262,000

A road worker who developed Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has been awarded compensation after being forced to leave his job.

Adrian Bideau, 25, worked for Norfolk County Council using a variety of vibrating tools including wacker plates, saws and breaker packs. Mr Bideau worked long hours because of the bonus scheme operated by the Council at the time.

HAVS, which can be caused by using vibrating power tools, affects the joints, nerves and muscles in the hands, arms and wrists. It can be very painful, causing numbness, tingling sensations and a whitening of the skin. It is also called ‘Vibration White Finger’.

Mr Bideau now finds it difficult to work outside and his condition is much worse in the winter. He was forced to leave his job because of the injury.

After bringing his claim against his former employer he has been awarded £262,000. The Council has now discontinued the use of the bonus scheme. In addition it monitors exposure to vibrating tools.
