Thousands of British workers suffering from an asbestos-related disease will not now be able to claim compensation following a ruling of the House of Lords. Their decision removes an established right to compensation for pleural plaques, a scarring of the lungs.
The Law Lords ruled that pleural plaques was not a disease that caused symptoms, despite the anxiety it usually causes.
Chris Stansfield, Nelsons comments: “ This is devastating news for lots of people who know they have been affected by asbestos and fear what may happen in the future. There is now an urgent need for the Government to look into this situation. Last year, within two months of another judgment by the House of Lords which adversely affected asbestos disease sufferers, the law was changed by Parliament – let us hope this happens again.”
